EPF problems: who can actually help you

EPFO processes over 70 million accounts. Roughly 16 million claims are rejected or stuck every year. If you are one of them, here is an honest guide to your options — free and paid.

Which channel do you need?

Start here before hiring anyone or paying any fees.

KYC mismatch / name mismatch / UAN issue
Fix via UMANG app or UAN portal first (free). If employer approval is stuck, try FinRight — they specialise in employer-side escalation.
Employer not depositing PF contributions
File with Chief Labour Commissioner (CLC) — free, has enforcement power. FinRight also handles this. Don't pay for this service without trying CLC first.
Claim submitted but stuck / no credit
File on EPFiGMS first (free). If no movement in 30 days, escalate via CPGRAMS. For larger amounts or complex cases, FinRight or Kustodian may accelerate.
Death claim — nominee or family of deceased employee
Kustodian specialises here. Death claims involve EDLI, EPS family pension, and EPF balance — complex paperwork best handled professionally given the stakes.
Higher pension — joint option was filed
Complex legal area. Kustodian has experience with higher-pension cases. Also consider a labour law advocate familiar with the Kerala HC / SC judgment on this topic.
Dormant account / old employer doesn't exist
EPFiGMS + UMANG can surface the account. For defunct employers, FinRight or a local Labour Court application may be needed. This is the hardest category — be prepared for months of effort.

EPFO's official grievance portal. Handles all complaint types: KYC, transfers, withdrawals, employer non-deposit, passbook errors. Official SLA: 30 working days (frequently missed). Always get a grievance registration number and screenshot it.

How to file:
  1. Login with UAN at epfigms.gov.in
  2. Select grievance category → describe issue clearly
  3. Note the grievance registration number
  4. If no resolution in 30 days: escalate via CPGRAMS or re-file with "Reminder" flag

EPFO Helplines
1800-118-005 (toll-free) · 9966044425 (WhatsApp text)

Toll-free helpline operates Mon–Sat 9 am–6 pm. Good for status checks and basic guidance. Cannot resolve issues — but can confirm claim status and direct you to the right regional office. WhatsApp number is text-only; useful for passbook queries.

Available on Android & iOS

Government's unified app. Handles claim submission (Form 31, 19, 10C), passbook access, claim status tracking, and EPFiGMS grievances — all in one place. More reliable than the web portal on mobile. Best for passbook checks and simple claims.

Chief Labour Commissioner (CLC)
Regional offices (find yours on clc.gov.in)

The CLC has enforcement powers against employers. If your employer is not depositing contributions, this is the right escalation — not EPFO. File a complaint with your regional CLC office (most have online intake forms). Resolution is case-by-case and may take months for large arrear disputes.

CPGRAMS

Centralised Public Grievance Redress and Monitoring System — escalation beyond EPFO to the Ministry of Labour & Employment. Use this after EPFiGMS has failed. Official SLA: 30 days. Has ministerial-level visibility, which sometimes accelerates otherwise-stuck cases.

Nuclear option: Consumer Court + SC precedent. The Supreme Court held in Shiv Kumar Joshi v. EPFO that an employee is a consumer and EPFO is a service provider under the Consumer Protection Act. If EPFO has demonstrably failed your valid claim, a consumer complaint in your District Consumer Forum costs ₹200 and has a 90-day disposal target. This is underused but effective. RTI as a pressure tool. A Right to Information application to your EPFO regional office costs ₹10 and must be replied to within 30 days. Asking for "all records related to my UAN XXXXXXXXXX including claim status, rejection reason, and internal notes" often forces a proper review of stuck claims. Use our RTI letter generator →
