How to add or update your EPF nominee online — step by step
Without a valid EPF nominee, your family faces months of legal documentation after your death. The EPFO member portal makes updating nominations easy — if you know the exact steps. Here they are, sourced directly from the official EPFO guide.
Your EPF nomination is a legal declaration. It determines who receives your EPF balance, EDLI insurance payout (up to ₹7 lakh), and EPS family pension if you die in service. Getting this wrong — or not doing it at all — means your family inherits a legal problem at the worst possible time.
The good news: EPFO now lets you do it entirely online, without visiting any office, using Aadhaar-based e-sign.
Why your nomination matters more than you think
Three separate payouts depend on your EPF nominee:
| Benefit | What your nominee gets |
|---|---|
| EPF balance | Full balance, tax-free |
| EDLI insurance | ₹2.5 lakh to ₹7 lakh (based on EDLI formula) |
| EPS family pension | Monthly pension for widow/widower + children under 25 |
All three use the same nominee declaration (e-Nomination / Form 2). A single update covers all three.
When your old nomination becomes invalid
The law has strict rules on when a previously filed nomination automatically becomes void:
- On marriage: Any nomination made before marriage is automatically invalid after marriage. You must file a fresh nomination naming your spouse (and children, if any).
- When you acquire a family: If you previously nominated a friend or sibling (having no family at the time), that nomination becomes invalid the moment you get married or have a child. A fresh nomination in favour of a family member is mandatory.
The legal consequence: if your pre-marriage nomination still shows your mother and your spouse is not listed, your EPF nominee is legally unclear. Courts and EPFO both follow the scheme rules — not your intent.
Who can be a nominee?
If you are married
Only members of your family as defined by the EPF Scheme can be nominees:
- Spouse
- Children (sons up to majority; unmarried daughters; widowed daughters; children of deceased sons)
- Dependent parents (mother; father only if you have no family)
You cannot nominate a sibling, friend, or other relative once you have a family. Any such nomination is invalid.
If you are unmarried (no family)
You may nominate any person — a parent, sibling, or friend. However, the moment you marry, that nomination becomes invalid and you must file a fresh one.
Multiple nominees
You can split the benefit among multiple nominees. You declare the percentage share for each (must total 100%). Example: 60% to spouse, 40% to mother.
Step-by-step: how to file e-Nomination
This is the official EPFO process from the Employee Information Booklet (January 2023).
Before you start, ensure:
- Your UAN is activated and you know your UAN + password.
- Your mobile number is linked to your Aadhaar (needed for OTP-based e-sign at the end).
- Use a desktop browser, preferably Mozilla Firefox.
Step 1: Go to https://unifiedportal-mem.epfindia.gov.in/memberinterface/ and log in with your UAN and password.
Step 2: Click the View tab → Profile. Upload a profile photo (JPG/JPEG, under 100 KB) and verify all personal details including your permanent/current address. This must be done before e-Nomination becomes accessible.
Step 3: Click the Manage tab → E-Nomination.
Step 4: A screen appears showing your UAN, name, date of birth, gender, father’s/husband’s name, marital status, address, date of joining EPF, and date of joining EPS. Review these carefully. Click Proceed if all details are correct.
Step 5: Click “Yes” on the family declaration prompt.
Step 6: Click “Add family details”. For each person you want to nominate, add:
- Full name
- Date of birth
- Relationship to you
- Aadhaar number (optional but recommended)
- Address
Click “Add Row” for each additional nominee.
Step 7: Under “Nomination details”, declare the percentage share for each nominee. All shares must add up to 100%.
Step 8: Click “Save EPF nomination”.
Step 9: Click the “e-Sign” button. Enter your Aadhaar Virtual ID (VID) or Aadhaar number to generate an OTP, which is sent to the mobile number registered with your Aadhaar card.
Step 10: Enter the OTP and submit.
Your e-Nomination is now registered with EPFO. You will receive a confirmation. Share a copy with your employer for their records (the old Form 2 paper submission is now replaced by this online process, but employers must maintain a record).
What happens if you have no valid nomination?
If no nomination exists — or if the nomination is legally invalid (pre-marriage nomination after marriage) — the EPF balance and EDLI payout go to:
- Widow/widower
- Minor children
- Widowed daughters
- Dependent parents
This sounds reasonable, but the process without a nomination is far slower: the family must produce succession certificates, indemnity bonds, and legal heir certificates. Claims that take 3–7 days with a valid nomination can take months without one.
UAN troubleshooting: what if you cannot access the portal?
| Problem | Solution |
|---|---|
| Forgot UAN | Visit portal → “Know your UAN” → enter mobile number registered with EPFO → get OTP |
| UAN not activated | Portal → “Activate UAN” → enter UAN, name, DOB, registered mobile → get activation OTP |
| Mobile number changed | Your current employer must update it in the employer portal; you cannot change it yourself |
| Aadhaar not linked to UAN | Go to Manage → KYC → add Aadhaar; employer must approve; or use EPFO’s e-KYC portal |
| Wrong Aadhaar linked | Apply for correction at your EPFO regional office via a joint request with your employer |
The one-mobile-one-UAN rule
One mobile number can be registered with only one UAN. If you ever had two UAN numbers (common when changing jobs without informing the new employer), your two accounts must be merged before you can use online services. Contact your current employer to initiate the merge.
After updating: confirm it worked
Log back in after 24–48 hours → View → E-Nomination to confirm your nomination is showing as submitted and approved. EPFO does not send a separate email confirmation.
Steps sourced from EPFO Employee Information Booklet (January 2023) and the EPFO Online Claim System FAQ. The portal URL and steps are correct as of May 2026. If the portal layout has changed, the core flow (UAN login → Manage → E-Nomination → e-Sign) remains the same.
